From the CBS 8 West Alabama Newsroom--  The fight over the fate of a historic building in downtown Selma will have to continue for at least a little while longer.

Property owner Tom Bolton appealed an order by the city to stabilize the old YMCA building at a Selma City Council hearing Tuesday.

Bolton told the council that the 127 year old building is caving in and should be torn down instead because it’s a danger to the public.

The city council decided to wait until their next regular meeting to vote on the matter.

"If they grant the appeal, that will allow the owner of the building to demolish the building. If they deny the appeal then they will proceed with notifying him on how many days he has to stabilize the structure," said city attorney Jimmy Nunn.

Bolton says it would cost him $60,000 dollars to demolish the building and somewhere between $600,000 and one million dollars to stabilize it.

The city council's next meeting is January 24th.
