Selma's Walton Theater is now open for business and showing first run movies. This is exciting news for residents because the city has gone years without a movie theater.

Opening this theater is a project that's been in the making for the last two years, as more demand for a local movie theater has grown in Selma.

Now residents won't have to travel to Prattville or Montgomery to see first run movies.

A crowd of about 300 can see them in Selma on the big screen while having their choice of candy, drinks, and popcorn.

While the theater only offers one screen, there will be multiple showings every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The Walton Theater used to be a performing arts center that housed plays for the public, but now the mayor says he is excited to see it grow into a movie theater because it is something residents has wanted for a long time.

"Right now, it's the beginning and the public is having an outcry for a movie theater. I think we are improvising and taking what we have and making it work," said Mayor George Evans.

The city has invested $68,000 into this project in order to have the latest state-of-the art equipment. Those behind the project and Selma residents hope everyone will support it, so it can stay alive and grow even larger.
