CBS 8 News is covering Butler County where a man is behind bars after authorities say they found a horse abandoned in the Midway community.

Randolph Peterson is charged with cruelty to animals.

The sheriff tells CBS 8 Peterson moved out of town but left his horse behind tied up with no food, water or shelter.

The horse is now in the care of a local animal clinic.

The vet tells us he thinks the horse will be okay but had it gone just a couple of more days without water he would have died.

"It's hard to see this. I think that God calls us to take care of the creatures that he puts in our care and to the best of our ability. Everyone has different abilities to take care of their animal but everybody has the ability to give them water," says Josh Gardner.

Authorities say Peterson is out of jail on bond.
