Montgomery School Closings Creates Several Changes to School Routes

Montgomery students are heading back to school next week, but they may take different routes to get there. That's why the Montgomery Police Department and Montgomery Public Schools are encouraging the public to play it safe.

Changes to crossing guard locations, bus routes and school entrances are some of the changes coming to students traveling to school this fall.

Schools Superintendent Barbara Thompson says the school closings play a major roll in the alterations made to routes to and from montgomery schools.

"The changes are very necessary in order for us to transition our kids and moving these patrols around. We're trying to accommidate as you can see where we can predict where we'll have 100 plus kids crossing the street. We want them to cross where we have security guards. That's the message I really want to get out," says Montgomery Public School Superintendent Barbara Thompson.

She is encouraging parents and students to only cross streets in crosswalks and have a practice run before the first day of school.

A number of crossing guard locations have been added or changed this year including:

- A new crossing guard at Perrry Hill and Harrison Road

- A new guard at Harrison Road at the Forest Hills subdivision to help students walking to Flowers Elementary

- A new crossing guard added at Court and DEdgemont for Davis Elementary students -- Bellingrath Middle students are also asked to use that intersection for crossing

- A new crossing guard added to McGee Road near the Regions Bank to assist students going to Dannelly Elementary

- No longer a crossing guard at Fairview Avenue and Mobile Drive

- Parents who drive students to Bellingrath Middle will enter the campus from E.D. Nixon Boulevard, drop off or pick up students on the north side of the school and exit on Court Street

- S. Court Street at W. Patton Avenue

- S. Court Street at W. Edgemont Avenue

- Harrison Road at Green Ridge Road

- Perry Hill Road at Beth Manor Drive

- McGehee Road at Governors Drive

- Dresden Drive at Fieldcrest Drive

- Bellview Street at School Exit

- Early Street at Oak Street
